What is the Difference Between Reglazing and Refinishing a Tub?

It’s a fair question. With the terms “reglazing,” “refinishing,” “resurfacing,” and “repair” often thrown around simultaneously when discussing bathtub restoration, it’s definitely cause for confusion. Let’s talk about how different each of these processes are and what they mean.

Truth be told, all of these terms can be used interchangeably. While they can mean slightly different parts of the process, overall it’s totally acceptable to use these terms as though they all mean the same thing: transforming your old tub, tile, shower or sink from chipped, dirty and faded to bright, glossy and new-looking!

What is Tub Reglazing?

Technically, re-glazing refers to the last and final step in the tub restoration process: the professional coating. Once a bathtub’s surface has been repaired, filled and smoothed over with buffing, it’s ready to have a fresh coat of commercially-applied paint, or glaze coating, sprayed all over as the final seal and finish.

What is Tub Refinishing?

Refinishing typically refers to the entire process of restoring a tub, including repairs, resurfacing and reglazing. It’s the most often used term among professionals to describe the entire project start to finish.

So the main difference between the "bathtub refinishing” and “bathtub reglazing” is that the former refers to the entire restoration project and the latter refers to the commercial coating applied at the end of the process.

What is Tub Repair?

Again, you could probably use the word “repair” to also refer to the entire restoration process, but if you really want to get technical, the “repairs” could more accurately refer to the fixing of the body of the tub. This might include filling small cracks and chips, buffing out scratches and deep cleaning areas of rust and grime. It’s usually the very first phase of tub restoration.

What is Tub Resurfacing?

Like “refinishing,” tub resurfacing could also easily be a term used to describe the entire repair and restoration process of reviving an old bathtub. However, it can also be used to indicate the more specific step of correcting the surface of the tub prior to the paint coating. This would include the repairs and buffing needed to create a smooth surface.
